Aviation Liquidation

Martin Jetpack Tender and Online Auction

Martin Aircraft Company Limited, a New Zealand firm, spent decades developing the Martin Jetpack, a personal vertical take-off and landing aircraft powered by twin ducted fans, created by Glenn Martin in the early 1980s. Despite industry recognition, the company entered liquidation on March 23, 2021, with Grant Thornton's David Ruscoe and Russell Moore appointed as liquidators.

The Challenge

Operations halted in 2020, closing the Christchurch production facility. Key IT assets remained in uncertain condition with expired support contracts. Seven fully assembled Jetpack aircraft required reassembly, and documentation existed across hundreds of boxes. The company represented $125 million investment in development.

The Process

Skylarc coordinated recovery and reassembly efforts across multiple Christchurch sites, collaborating with former staff and IT providers to restore servers and infrastructure. An international tender site was established for main business assets including latest Jetpack models, design information, parts, and intellectual property. A separate online auction handled historical models and smaller assets.

Marketing

An international campaign featured advertisements in Heliops Magazine, New Zealand Engineering News, New Zealand Aviation News, and Facebook. Convergence Communications handled media relations. Coverage included TV1's Seven Sharp, TV3's The AM Show, National Radio, and newspapers. Direct marketing targeted the New Zealand aviation industry and international e-VTOL market players.

Results

All intellectual property, computer servers, research materials, and latest Jetpack models were acquired by a single international organization intending to continue development. The online auction succeeded, with Jetpacks placed in museums including MOTAT (Auckland) and Christchurch Museum. Individual Jetpacks sold for more than $150,000, exceeding liquidator expectations.
